From “Haddie Faye’s Adventures: In the garden,” the second book in the series:
“Come on, April, this corn crib is neat, it’s where they store ear corn for the animals,” Haddie explains as she opens the corn crib door. Both girls were surprised to find Pecking Patty sitting on a straw bale looking at them.
“Is that Pecking Patty?” April whispers.
“Yes, be careful, she pecks if you try to take her eggs,” Haddie says.
“Pecks?” April gets behind Haddie and watches her walk closer and closer to Pecking Patty.—April’s never been this close to any chicken before and is holding her breath as they get closer. Pecking Patty starts to fluff out her feathers and clucking, a sure sign she is sitting on a nest.
“Haddie, maybe we need to go get Grandma Hazel and let her look in the nest.” April stops moving and lets Haddie inch her way closer.
